What you need to know during this bushfire season
During this time of horrific bushfires across Australia, it is important that we all do our part in helping to prevent fires. This is especially important on days that the weather and conditions are ideal for bushfires.
These are some tips to follow when you’re on the road to help prevent fires;
- When parking, do not park your car on long, dry grass as the heat from your car’s exhaust or engine can ignite a fire.
- Be sure to take all rubbish with you especially glass and broken bottles as these materials can act as a magnifying glass and when in contact with direct sunlight can start a fire.
- Dispose of cigarettes correctly, don’t throw them in the bush or out the window of your car. Incorrectly discarding cigarettes isn’t only causing a major fire hazard it is also illegal. From 17 January 2020, NSW drivers who are caught throwing lit cigarettes from their car will be fined $660 and five demerit points.
- These penalties will be doubled during total fire pan periods to 10 demerit points and a fine of up to $11,000.
To report someone who has thrown a lit cigarette out the window of a vehicle, contact the NSW Rural Fire Service hotline on 1800 679 737.
